The Sound of Design – Creating a Music-Inspired Visual Identity

I was tasked with creating a digital artwork for The Sound of Design, exploring how music can be expressed visually. The challenge was to translate rhythm, emotion, and atmosphere from a chosen song, artist, or genre into a bold, imaginative composition. The goal was to turn sound into sight, capturing the essence of music through visual storytelling

Concept

The concept focused on the idea that music has a visual rhythm. I explored how colour, movement, and layering could mirror tempo and tone, from gradients and light flares to typography and texture, I was guided by the emotional qualities of the chosen music. Whether interpreting the smooth brass tones of jazz or the electric energy of pop, the aim was to create an artwork that felt alive with sound.

Execution

I designed a vinyl cover and CD cover, both visually connected through a cohesive design identity. I built compositions that visually reflected the rhythm and feel of the chosen subject. Typography was carefully integrated to complement the tone of the music, while layout and colour palette choices ensured the designs unified the  album and cd design concept.

Outcome

The final designs successfully transformed sound into a visual experience. Showing an ability to communicate mood and movement through imagery. The project showcased how music and design can blend seamlessly to create a memorable and emotionally engaging visual identity.
