Year 11 Prom Night Photography
Category
Candid event photography, capturing the spontaneous moments, personalities and emotions that happen naturally throughout an event. These images were taken during a school prom and showcase a more creative approach to photographing young people enjoying and celebrating a special occasion.
Concept
The aim was to move beyond traditional posed photographs and capture genuine reactions and interactions as they happened. From friends enjoying the photo booth to an unexpected moment of excitement, the focus was on personality, expression and the atmosphere of the evening.
I particularly enjoy using black and white photography for moments like these. Removing colour can draw attention to facial expressions, body language and emotion, creating images that feel timeless and more documentary in style.
Execution
Rather than directing every photograph, I looked for natural opportunities throughout the evening and stayed alert to those fleeting moments that can easily be missed. I used the surroundings, available lighting and the environment of the event to create photographs that felt authentic rather than overly staged.
Post-production was also used selectively to enhance the mood of the images, with monochrome processing helping to emphasise contrast, expression and detail.
Outcome
The resulting photographs capture something different from the traditional prom portrait. They tell small stories about the people, personalities and experiences that make an event memorable.
For me, photography is about more than simply taking a good photograph. It is about noticing those little moments that happen in between the formal photographs and preserving the memories, reactions and personalities that might otherwise be forgotten. These are often the images that bring an event back to life.
